During the summer vacation, when work have become a little distant and I have had a chance to slowly recharge, I often get a lot of ideas. Ideas about what I would like to begin – and often thoughts about changing job will also pop up at this time.

Maybe you also think like this. And if that should be the case, then maybe it makes sense to keep some other things in mind before you throw yourself into new job applications, promotions, or anything else.

Often there is a big difference between what is important at the beginning and the end of our career. And I usually admire the drive than many young people display when they really enter the job market.

However, I have also experienced how these young people, when they are at the top of the career ladder get hit by for example stress, becomes demotivated Here, they often need to look at their lives and careers from a whole new angle-

Based on the experience I have had with just this type of client – as well as a little research – I have compiled a list of good career advice that many might have liked to have had at an earlier point in their lives.

  1. Life is short

Life is too short for a job or a boss you do not like. Unfortunately, many people think that they just have to go through a difficult period before it gets better. It just rarely does. And sometimes you simply do no manage to get through that period.
Although I myself spend many hours helping others, I have also thought like most.

For example, I myself “just” had to get through a summer vacation. But I didn’t get through it. And I had to take sick leave. That will not happen again!

Nobody knows what tomorrow brings – so it’s better to take the step towards something better today.

  1. A network actually matters

Networking events can be tedious. And maybe you have a hard time just talking to your colleagues at the coffee machine. It could also be that you are introverted – or that smalltalk is just not for you.

However, several studies emphasize the importance of having a large network. In fact, it turns out that several successful people have the largest and broadest social networks. This means that the more you nurture and expand your network, the better chance you have of success.

  1. Your health is more important than your career

Many successful business people find it difficult to strike the right balance between work and leisure – and unfortunately they often end up suffering from stress or burnout. In the statistics, the number of people suffering from stress speaks for itself. And even physical ailments can come as a direct result of a bad balance between work and leisure. In fact, it is much easier to maintain good health, both physically and mentally, than it is to healed afterwards.
Make sure you have a balance in the time you spend at work and the time you spend with your family and on leisure. It is crucial that you establish a healthy and balanced lifestyle without becoming fanatical. You will most likely find that it benefits your career in the long run.

  1. Be offline – and experience real life

NONE of life’s great moments take place behind your computer screen. In our world where we are always online, it can be tempting to let the screen control our lives.
My contention, however, is that you certainly will not stand at the end of your life and wished that during your life had spend more time checking emails, status updates on social media, etc. (Perhaps I should learn from my own assertion as well?)

  1. Lifelong learning

Changes are happening all the time. And much more frequently than just 30-50 years ago. Today, everyone has mobile phones and laptops at their workplace. That was far from the case in the past. Those things almost did not exist.
Today you do not get points for being able to operate a fax. And it is super important that you keep up with the developments that are taking place in your industry. Invest time in gaining new knowledge – to the extent that it can boost your career and perhaps lead to new opportunities.

  1. Be versatile

Being versatile, in particular, is linked to lifelong learning.

I have helped many people with career changes, and I therefore know how important it is to be versatile and embrace a wide range of knowledge. If you are going to change careers, then it is crucial that you can draw on past experiences that are relevant to your change.

A career change is not necessarily a desire. In fact, it may be necessary because some job types simply disappear – or just change markedly.

  1. You get the farthest with teamwork

You might as well learn to love teamwork. It is important, both for yourself, your well-being, and your career that you are good at working with others. I have had to admit that myself. And a well-functioning team can create incredible results (just watch the World Cup football). I myself am the type, who used to have to handle everything myself. And only later did I find satisfaction in making a team work – despite differences in the team.

  1. You do not have to worry in advance

How much time do you spend worrying unnecessarily – and in advance? What have these concerns resulted in? My guess is that you are certain not to have achieved very much positively by it.
Try to isolate the situation that your concerns are about. Map out your options, and then make a decision about what exactly you want to do.

  1. Failure is not the end

If you give up after a failure, you will never learn anything. Instead, see a mistake or a failure as a good opportunity to learn something. And then use that learning as a starting point for your next step forward. Find out what went wrong. And, for example, ask yourself what consequences it has given you and what you have learned.

  1. A happy life is the journey, not the destination.

Many people think that they will be happy if they get a certain job, lose the extra kilos, find a girlfriend, etc. It may seem intimidating; but that in not going to happen. A happy life comes from your own approach to life. From yourself. From within. So you have to choose to be in this world in such a way that it makes you happy. Then you will most likely also experience that things start to turn around.

I would really like to hear if you have other good and important advice that others might benefit from. Feel free to write a message in the comments field on Facebook.
